Home is Where the Heart…Lives
We all know that wonderful feeling in the summer months when you fling open the shutters the sun comes flooding in and you feel exhilarated and ready, willing and able to face the day ahead. This is probably caused by the release of serotonin into our systems. Serotonin is sometimes called the “happy” chemical because it manifests a feeling of wellbeing and happiness.
Conversely, is there nothing more depressing that waking up in the dead of winter and opening those shutters to a gloomy, dark and miserable morning? Some people find this debilitating and suffer from a condition known as S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which creates, depression, lethargy and other negative emotional and physical conditions.
Of course, there is nothing we can do about the changing of the seasons – apart from moving to a tropical paradise – however, there is a lot we can do to make our home environment a happy, healthy and brighter place to live.
Many of us exercise on a regular basis and whether your workout of choice is Hot Yoga or a ten mile run you will still return to the nest when you’re done and if it doesn’t feel as welcoming or restful as it should do that feeling of wellbeing will be pretty short-lived.
Studies teach us that a decent night’s sleep is paramount to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Quality mattresses and pillows are not cheap, but the investment will be worth it. Make sure you check for the degree of firmness you prefer and take advice if you have any long-term back or neck problems as to the best fabrication for you.
Try adding some color into your most used living areas. We are not suggesting painting the house hot pink but lighter colors and a feature wall in a pastel shade can make even the dreariest winter’s day a lot easier to cope with and sunny days a little sunnier.
Bring a sense of the outdoors inside. Houseplants are not only aesthetically pleasing but they can help clean the air as well as commercial air fresheners and if you research carefully shouldn’t take too much maintenance.
There can be no denying that returning to a messy home can quickly wipe the smile of your face, or that trying to find something you need but can’t find amidst the chaos can rapidly have the steam coming out your ears. The simple answer is to declutter.
Not only will decluttering simplify your life but being surrounding by only things that really have a true connection or meaning will add to your overall sense of wellbeing.
